When the Abraham Geiger College was founded in 1999, none of the participants
could have imagined that this institution would establish itself so quickly
as a unique training centre for rabbis on the European continent. Today,
our students come from many different countries and serve Jewish communities
in German-speaking countries during their studies. Our teaching staff
has grown favourably and offers a valuable complement to the programme
of studies at the University of Potsdam.
Thanks to the excellent cooperation with the president of the University
of Potsdam, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Loschelder, and the School of Jewish Studies,
the Abraham Geiger College today already plays a significant role in
research and teaching on Judaism and has contributed to the reemergence
of a flourishing
Jewish life in Germany and Europe. A highlight of the last year was the
Emil Fackenheim Lecture of Rabbi John D. Rayner which is published in
this annual report.
All these activities were accompanied by the work of the board of governors.
Heartfelt congratulations go to Rabbi Julia Neuberger D.B.E. for her
elevation to
Baroness and to Rabbi John D. Rayner C.B.E. who has been made a Senator
of the College on the occasion of his 80th birthday. We cordially welcome
Rabbi David Goldberg O.B.E. as a new member of the board. Rabbi Albert
H. Fiedlander O.B.E. has
unfortunately passed away on 8th July, 2004. We shall remember him
with great
love and reverence.
Dr. Josef Joffe
Chairman of the Board of Governors
